Ruthie
New Hope Found Through Mission Solano
Ruthie never thought a simple thing like a glass of water would ever be beyond her means. But that was before she and her son, Josh, lost the home they were living in.
My Mom had a brain tumor and nobody knew it. She sold the family home where Josh and I were living and I didn't know until about a week before it sold. I had a week to put everything in storage and find somewhere for us to live.
I found the Mission in the phone book under shelter services. I called and they said, Definitely, yes, come on over. There'll be room. That was last Christmas, right before Josh's birthday. I was scared to death. Im 51 years old and everything was gone. But everyone here has just been wonderful. I took Josh to his grandmothers so he would have stability.
This is a nomadic shelter — getting on the bus, going to different churches to sleep and eat. There's nowhere to have friends over or do homework. I wanted Josh to have something more stable. Even though Im not real happy with the situation, its only temporary. The people here are giving me the help I need to find community services: Where I can go to get housing for me and Josh. Where I can get medical help. When I first came here, I didn't have a clue. This has been a real learning experience.
Thank God for Mission SOLANO! Ill never take a glass of water for granted again!
