Donny
To look at Donny and his young son, Benny, you’d never know that when Donny came to Mission SOLANO two years ago his life was in turmoil.
You may remember Donny’s story from our November 2007 newsletter. He was raised in San Bernardino, California, and moved to Fairfield in 2006. “I’d been in prison and moved to Dixon, then I got arrested again, and when I got out I was doing drugs. I told myself I was going to change and since I was in a new location, I figured I could change myself.” But that didn’t happen. “I kept doing drugs and ended up being homeless. I was at rock bottom but the Mission took me in.”
“Having my wife and kids be homeless was terrible. That’s part of what made me want to change my life. There we were, staying at the nomadic shelter, getting on the bus every night to go to a different church. During the day I was working or helping out at the Mission. The people at the Mission really encouraged me. But before they let me into the New Life Program, they wanted to see how much effort I was willing to put into changing my life,” Donny says.
“I knew I needed to get myself together before I could raise my family. I knew I needed structure, but you have to be really serious about the recovery program or it’s easy to mess up. It was worth it to me!”
After spending several months in our New Life recovery program, Donny was able to return to his family. “When I was in the program I made a lot of strides. Today the sky’s the limit for me. I’ve got a car, insurance, a job and a home for my family. And I’m in a position to give back to the Mission by doing things like volunteering at Christmas and Thanksgiving.” Thanks to the Mission, Donny reunited with his family and found a steady job. Today he is the loving father and husband he’s always wanted to be! “I’m staying out of trouble, staying on the right path, raising my family.”
